BrewPi controllers consist of an Arduino, Raspberry Pi, solid-state relays and other breakout circuit boards. They are basically fermentation controllers on steroids. While most PIDs function to control the mash in HERMS or RIMS type setups, BrewPi incorporates its own PID algorithm to control fermentation.

Before I bought the Pi I had no experience with linux or any other shell environment. My version is setup with a Raspberry Pi B+ (replaced last year by the Raspberry Pi 2 B). The original BrewPi was setup with a Raspberry Pi 1 A. There is a new version, the 3, however I have not tested the third version yet. A few notes for the Pi:

We've seen brewing projects where a Pi controls simple heating and cooling, but here, Ted uses a Pi here to control all the parts of the brewing method called partial mash: for this he needs to be able to: Open and close a valve to a tank of propane Start a grill igniter to light the burner Detect if the burner actually did light

MashBerry is a Raspberry PI based beer-brewing controller. It is designed to automate the mashing-process for the homebrewer. MashBerry can be operated via a Web-interface or via a Display and an IR-remote. The temperature is controlled using a PID-controller, the temperature-measurement is done with a PT1000 or a Dallas 18B20. For power-control an external Solid-State-Relay is used. The whole.

For the homebrew hardware nerds out there who also homebrew beer: "BrewPi is an open source fermentation controller that runs on an Arduino (for now) and a Raspberry Pi. It can control your beer temperature with 0.1 degree precision, log temperature data in nice graphs and is fully configurable from a web interface." Source code.

#1 I have recently retrofitted the controls of my old rusty brew rig that I put together back in 2002. I am now using a Raspberry Pi to control my propane BIAB rig. The gpio on the rpi is used to monitor the temperature via a DS18B20 probe and control the burner output via a servo motor attached to the propane regulator valve.
